Holly Troy
With a music career spanning over 25 years—Holly Troy is a singer who has been in hundreds of live performances, is on several recordings, has produced records, and is a songwriter. Her classical background began at seven with the flute—but it wasn’t until she co-founded her first band at 15 that she felt like she began to understand who she was. At 16, she performed one of her first gigs at legendary punk club CBGB in New York City, and it was there that she had the first inklings of the power of voice.
Since (and during) her (post) punk days, Holly has earned a degree in art and creative writing, became a certified yoga teacher, a reiki teacher, and a writing teacher. She has also fallen in love with permaculture ideals and practices, and feels that creativity and sustainability not only go hand-in-hand; they are essential for our survival—personally and as a species.
“I am interested in life, those things that celebrate life, those experiences that are beautiful, worthwhile, and profound, those subtle moments and sensations that make our lives uniquely our own. I am interested in connecting and offering uplifting energy to the cosmic consciousness as a whole.”
Holly began seriously practicing at Jivamukti Yoga in 1994 where Sharon Gannon and David Life were among her teachers. In 1996, she completed Yoga Teacher’s Training at Sivananda Yoga Vedanta Center. Holly bases her yoga classes on compassion, beginning with compassion for the Self. She carries in her heart (and soul) a lesson from her first yoga class, “There is no competition here. Where you are today is where you need to be. You are already perfect.”
She says, “Voice isn’t all about singing. It’s about how we are in the world. It’s about self-expression (whatever form that takes) and communication, how we relate, resonate, and harmonize with our selves and one another. It’s about self-knowledge and being true to that knowledge.”
Her mission is to explore self-expression, art, health, and sustainability through love, deep play, radical self-acceptance, joyful responsibility, and co-creation.
Holly holds a BA in Creative Writing and Art from Hunter College at the City University of New York. Her writing has been published in Cosmopolitan Magazine, Night Train, Earth’s Daughters, Elephant Journal, and Creative Essence Magazine.
